While other damselflies hold their wings together in an upright position while pausing for a break, spreadwings are recognized by the way they rest their wings horizontally like a dragonfly while perched. Earlier this morning, this female Southern Spreadwing (Lestes australis) visited the vegetated pools at susquehannawildlife.net headquarters. It’s likely that she’s wandering widely to forage on flying insects during the couple of weeks needed to reach maturation before her move to a more sizeable lake or pond to find a mate and breed.
